Suzetrigine (brand name Journavx™) is an oral, non-opioid analgesic developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals. It received FDA approval on January 30, 2025, for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acute pain in adults, including post-surgical and trauma-related pain. This marks the first new mechanism pain medicine approved in over 20 years. 
Unlike traditional opioids, Suzetrigine works by selectively inhibiting the NaV1.8 voltage-gated sodium channel, which is predominantly expressed in peripheral pain-sensing neurons. By blocking pain signaling at this peripheral level—before the signal reaches the brain—it effectively reduces pain without engaging central opioid receptors. 
This novel mechanism gives Suzetrigine key advantages: no addictive potential, no respiratory depression, and a more favorable safety profile compared to opioid-based therapies. 
In clinical trials, Journavx showed good tolerability. The most commonly reported side effects included itching, muscle spasms, and rash.
